Part-Time Library Clerk position

Supervisor: Library Director

Hours of Work: Part-Time (10 hours/wk.)

Job Summary: The Library Clerk assists the Director and library patrons by completing a range of clerical duties that include checking materials in and out, contacting patrons regarding their accounts, returning materials to proper locations, reserving and renewing items, processing interlibrary loans, preparing materials for shelving, collecting payments, and maintaining patron files. The clerk will also assist library users with technology, follow library policies and procedures, monitor the behavior and conduct of patrons in the library, and may, as assigned, complete other tasks related to library operations.

  • Patron Services:
    • Provides circulation services for patrons at the library’s front desk.
    • Assists patrons with accessing library resources.
    • Assists with computer troubleshooting, software, and hardware.
    • Assists with providing timely interlibrary loan services, including locating requested resources.
    • Maintains records of payments and donations that come across circulation desk.
  • Collection Maintenance:
    • Assists with physical processing and maintenance of library resources.
    • Efficiently shelves and pulls library materials and assists with shifting and arranging collections.
    • Assists with maintenance of the library’s catalog, including updating records as necessary.
    • Generates statistical reports, bibliographies, and materials lists as needed.
  • Facilities Management
    • Monitors the library in the Director’s absence.
    • Communicates library policies and procedures.
    • Maintains safe conditions for staff, public, and building operation.
  • Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills:
    • High school diploma OR GED required; college degree preferred.
    • Experience providing excellent customer service in a public-facing enterprise.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Organizational skills, time management, and the ability to prioritize tasks.
    • Proficiency and comfort with computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, telephones, popular software, and consumer electronics including cell phones, laptops, and tablets.
    • Ability to shelve and/or retrieve books from top and bottom shelves.
    • Ability to climb stairs and carry books across library. Ability to lift 25 pounds when required.
    • Experience with or aptitude for learning standard library principles and practices.
